NorWesCon 32- Same song as last year...

Postby Mcbastard on Mon Nov 17, 2008 12:58 pm

Hey Party Peeps!

First off I want to make clear that this is not us or me trying to throw NWC under a bus or make anyone out to be the bad guy. This is intended for the party groups / people to make an informed decision rather than be blindsided at the last minute. Personally, I'd rather not see a great deal of people spend a whole lot of money for nothing.

Part of the Bling (aka Mythic Studio's) staff, myself included, went to the NWC meeting this last Saturday (Nov. 15th meeting), and it pretty much went the way we figured it would- same Con, same song.

All the same rules from last year STILL apply- the $1000 paid in full up front damage deposit, the hotel still requires you to use their contractor to move any and all furniture out of your room, and of course, the lowered occupancy limit for the lakeside suites.

Our conclusion- Caveat Emptor. If you are OK to the terms and conditions then go right ahead, but if you want to throw the party that we (as in the serious party crews) are used to and / or want to, then do not expect to be able to do so. The rules are written and won't change, so don't expect exceptions to be made. Expect the 8-12 person occupancy limit for regular rooms, fork out a grand up front, and pay them to move the furniture at whatever rate for the privilege. I remember last year when someone got led to believe one thing and got hit with something else. Like I said last year, some of us front too much $$$ on a maybe and nod-and-wink promises to be comfortable with that kind of risk.

Our suggestion- Talk to us privately. We may be able to help.

Peace out.

thanks for the update, sean - that's some useful info....

i'd like to point out that IBT stayed with the hotel last year, and despite some broken promises from doubletree, we had our longest auction ever..........

we think that the hotel is still viable if we're a little more flexible with them then what's in our comfort zones....

upon reading that again, i see that i need to make a correction to the statement i've highlighted...

the contractors the hotel used for furniture removal were Byron & myself. We did everything we could to make it as cheap as possible, and did a bit of bartering for con badges with at least one group, so it was not the massive expense that was first quoted by the hotel when this was first brought up last year.

last i'd heard Byron and i will be able to do this again this year, so it shouldn't be a big deal...

...so.....

That would make you and Byron the Hotel Contractors then, so my statement would be correct.

So, as the Hotel Contractors, what's the fee for clearing out a lake side suite or any other room for that matter?

yes, we are the contractors... your original statement was a little misleading, i thought, because the hotel had original contacted Mayflower moving about doing that, and wanted to charge an exorbitant amount of money for that job...

i would have to talk to Ryan to give you and exact price, but i believe that we charged Shockwave somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 to move all thier furniture, but it might have been less...

if you seriously want a quote, i'll let Byron know and he can contact you....

Moving cost

Postby Voodrew on Sun Feb 08, 2009 4:48 am

Byron charged us at Shockwave a reasonable $175. I say reasonable because for the first convention in 12 years of our history, we walked in to a room that was torn down around us with very little effort from our group, then on Sunday, we had the hotel walk through the room for a damage inspection, turned over our keys and left knowing that the rooms would be set back up and it wasn't our responsibility if it wasn't.

Since I did not hear from the hotel, I assume Byron and Co set the room back up with out a hitch.

I would like to thank them again, and will definitely be using their service again if it is available.

P.S. we also tipped the guys $25 for 1) we understand that we (of all the groups that ask them to do this) were the only ones left come deployment day, 2) They did a fast and efficient job, 3) there was a whole hell of a lot less stress for our group, and 4) only had $20's, $50's and/or $100's and it made it easier not dealing with getting change.

Thanks again Byron and Co for stepping up for this service.
